TEAM BIBLE BOWL RULES - 2005

  1. A game shall consist of fifteen (15) questions.  Questions thrown out are not counted as one of the fifteen.  In the event more extra questions are needed than the ones provided, Quizmasters are to pick a question at random from an unused set of questions.

  2. TEAMS - Youth shall indicate the team on which they will play at registration time.  There will be no changing teams thereafter.  A particular church may enter no more then three (3) teams with a minimum of three (3) layers each.  A team for any one game shall consist of no more than four (4) players.  Substitutes cannot be made during a game.  Eligibility shall be restricted from 7th to 12th grade.  Each team must apply for either "A League" (for teams with prior Bible Bowl experience) or "B League" (for teams which have not participated in Bible Bowl before.  If you have participated in the B League but never placed 3rd or higher, you may still participate at the "B" level.)

  3. Questioning and Answering

  1. Questions and Judges' decisions shall be based on the Small Catechism and its explanation.

  2. The Quizmaster will start each question with "Ready."

  3. The team whose light goes on first has the right to answer the question first.

  4. A team will please wait to answer until after its light has been acknowledged by the Quizmaster.

  5. A team member may receive help from teammates in preparing an answer for a question.

  6. Once a light has been acknowledged, whoever is going to give the answer for the team has five (5) seconds to begin speaking his/her answer.  He/she has fifteen (15) seconds to complete the answer once begun.

  7. Please note that only one team member is allowed to answer any given question.  The first answer given will be the answer that will be judged correct or incorrect.

  8. A team which does not begin to answer within the five second time limit or has not completed its answer in the fifteen second time limit is considered to have answered incorrectly.

  9. If one team's answer is deemed "incorrect," the second team has the opportunity to answer the question.  The second team isn't required to answer.

  10. If either team fails to turn its light on within ten seconds following the reading of the question, the question will be passed.  The question will be counted as one of the fifteen.

  11. If no light has gone on and the ten second time limit has not expired, either team may ask to have the question re-read.  A question may be re-read only once.  The identical time limits as outlined above apply also for the second reading of the question.

  12. Correct answers of unanswered or incorrectly answered questions may be revealed to the contestants at the discretion of the judge.

  13. In the event that a team switches on the light and incorrectly answers before the Quizmaster has finished reading the question, the Quizmaster shall re-read the entire question to the other team, without interruption, given them a chance to answer.  The time limits outlined above apply here too.

  14. Answers given are to be judged as either "correct" or "incorrect."  Teams are not permitted to "challenge" an answer which has already been judged as "correct."

  1.  Scoring

  1. The team which correctly answers the question receives ten (10) points.  An incorrect answer is a three (3) point deduction.

  2. If after fifteen (15) questions there is a tie, then a tie-breaker question will be asked.  Manner of scoring remains the same.  The first team to take the lead is declared the winner.

  1. Double elimination - A team which loses twice (unless your second loss occurs in the placing round) will be entered into a single-elimination consolation competition.

  2. Courtesy - Please show courtesy to the teams at the board and to those who have come to watch the Bible Bowl by not talking or walking around during a game.  Reserve all applause until the end of the match.

  3. Quizmasters and Judges - It is suggested that pastors or their appointees be the Quizmasters and Judges.  There shall be one Quizmaster and one Judge for each match.  It is also suggested that a person in the audience be asked to keep the "Official Score" on the provided results sheets.  A Timekeeper will also enforce the time rules from the audience.

THE INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION

  1. Any youth from LCMS churches in South Dakota may participate in the individual competition.  (This allows those who cannot raise a team to compete as well.)
